A modern parent's checklist

CLOTH DIAPERING

Cloth diapering has come a long way in the past decade. There are a multitude of styles and types of diapers. We understand cloth diapers are not for everyone, but there are a few reasons why you might want to try them

With that said, here are our recommendations.

Cotton Pre-folds

We found pre-folds combined with waterproof covers to be the most practical approach to cloth diapering. Pre-folds are economical, highly absorbent, easy to clean, and prevent blowouts. With snappi fasteners they are easy to put on and take off. Compared to microfleece, they clean more easily; simply dry them in the sun to remove odors and stains.

The Green Mountain Diapers pre-folds are hands down the best out there. Get 12 or 24 newborn size. The small size is far too large for most newborn babies. You'll want a few Snappis to tie them on a baby.

Covers

Waterproof covers go over the cotton pre-folds and prevent them from leaking. They also look super cute! We recommend getting a few smaller sizes and a few one-size. The one-size covers are huge when baby is just born but will have a much longer shelf life.

Based on our experience, Rumparooz and Blueberry have some of the best covers. flip and Thirsties also make quality products.

Wipes

If you're going to wash your diapers, you might as well wash your baby wipes as well. Cloth wipes are as easy to use and require no additional effort. You'll need a spray solution as well. You can make your own, or a few manufacturers have good sprays. The bumGenius spray has aloe and is free of harsh chemicals.

Diaper Rash Cream

Although diaper rash is less common with cloth, baby's bottom can sometimes get irritated, especially after a big poop. Vaseline and most diaper creams are not safe to use with cloth diapers. They will be absorbed by the diaper and make the diaper repel water. This Grovia stick is safe for cloth diapers and works well to heal and prevent redness.

Washing

There are many organic/all natural detergents on the market, but in our view the best detergent for washing cloth diapers is powdered Tide. It gets the pee and poop out, which is most important in cleaning diapers. If you are worried about using harsh detergents on baby clothes, run an extra rinse to be sure no Tide remains on the diapers.
